Three top tips to save water at home

Water is a precious resource that should be conserved whenever possible. If every homeowner took a few simple steps to reduce their water usage, it would make a significant impact on preserving this valuable natural resource.

Not only are there environmental benefits associated with reducing water consumption, but being savvy with your home’s H2O will also save you money on bills. In this post, we will explore several ways that you can save water at home.

Repair any leaks

Many of us may not think twice about a small leak or drip here or there, but leaks add up quickly and can cause serious damage if they are not addressed in a timely manner. Not only do leaked water and moisture cause issues like rot and mould, but they can also put a strain on our plumbing systems.

It’s estimated that around 9,400 gallons of water can be wasted due to leaks around the home. Therefore, it is important to take the time to repair any issues as soon as you notice them. Whether it’s a simple dripping tap or a more significant burst pipe, addressing a leak right away will save energy, money, and hassle in the long run.

Use the dishwasher instead of hand-washing dishes

When it comes to doing the dishes, there are two main options: washing by hand or using a dishwasher. Many people believe that hand washing dishes is more efficient in terms of water usage, but this is actually not the case. Dishwashers use less water, and they also use less energy. In fact, research has shown that dishwashers are on average four times more water efficient than washing dishes by hand per place setting.

Furthermore, dishwashers typically have more efficient water heating systems than the average home, so they use less energy overall. As a result, using a dishwasher is actually more environmentally friendly than washing dishes by hand. If you don’t have access to a dishwasher, then consider only filling your sink up halfway with water, particularly for smaller washes.

Get into good habits

There are many smaller considerations to make that can go a long way to helping you save water at home. Firstly, wasteful showering habits can put a serious strain on water supplies. One of the simplest and most effective ways to make your bathroom activities more environmentally friendly is to take shorter showers. Another option is to install low-flow shower heads, which use less water without sacrificing performance.

Additionally, it is important to be mindful about your consumption throughout the day. For example, you can reduce your water use by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or hand washing dishes. You can also consider using rain barrels or grey water systems to capture excess water from downspouts or laundry machines, which can then be used to water plants or flush toilets.

Overall, there are many simple methods for saving water in your home, and implementing these practices will not only benefit the environment, but can also help to save money on utility bills in the long run.
